What is Tyre Waste Certification?

Used tyres are non-biodegradable, so discarded ones pile up into a serious environmental problem. In landfills they block drainage and become breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes, which is why producers and importers must register and route end-of-life tyres through authorised recyclers.

Who Needs Tyre Waste Certification?

If your business makes, imports, fits or recycles tyres in India, these rules apply to you.

  • Tyre Manufacturers
  • Automobile Manufacturers
  • Vehicle Manufacturers
  • Tyre Importers
  • Vehicle Fleet Operators & Maintenance Centres
  • Recyclers and Refurbishers

Why Tyre Waste Management Authorisation (or License) is Important?

  1. 01

    Legal License

The EPR Certificate, introduced by CPCB, requires manufacturers and importers of tyres to register and manage tyre waste responsibly. Non-compliance can mean penalties, registration cancellation or a halt to business.

  2. 02

    Trade Profit

With rising environmental awareness, customers and partners prefer EPR-compliant companies. A proper certificate lifts brand reputation, especially for exporters and vehicle manufacturers.

  3. 03

    Environmental Accountability

Left untreated, used tyres cause soil pollution, clog drains and breed disease. Recycling them into rubber granules, fuel or construction material cuts pollution and feeds the circular economy.

Challenges in Tyre Waste Collection and Recycling

Producers are expected to tie up with CPCB-registered recyclers, but advanced tyre processing units are scarce, especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, which makes logistics a real challenge. Illegal dumping and informal sector operations further complicate traceability and compliance.

  • Limited recycling infrastructure in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities
  • High transportation costs
  • Illegal dumping and informal sector
  • Data tracking and traceability issues

EPR FAQ

Tyre Waste Questions

Quick answers to what producers ask us most about tyre EPR.

  • 1. What is End-of-Life Tyre (ELT)?

An end-of-life tyre is one that can no longer be used on a vehicle - worn out, damaged beyond retreading or withdrawn from service. Once a tyre reaches that stage it becomes tyre waste under the rules and must go to an authorised recycler.

  • 2. Do importers of tyres need EPR registration?

Yes. Anyone importing new or used tyres, or vehicles fitted with them, is treated as a producer and must register on the CPCB portal before import.

  • 3. Can I get EPR authorisation without recycler tie-ups?

You can begin the application, but agreements with registered recyclers are needed to meet collection targets and complete compliance.

  • 4. Are retreaders also considered recyclers?

Retreading extends a tyre's life rather than recovering material, so retreaders register in their own category. Only CPCB-registered recyclers generate the certificates that count towards your targets.

  • 5. Can I outsource tyre collection?

Yes. Collection can be run through authorised agencies or recyclers, but the obligation and the reporting stay with you as the producer.
